Ultra X4 750-Watt Modular Power Supply

So today for review I’ve got a power supply, but not just any, it’s the new X4 750Watt from Ultra. The X4 is a fully modular power supply that makes things much easier when it comes to keeping your case nice and tidy. The X4 also features many cables with enough connections for most any type of setup you’ve got. One of the great features about this PSU is that despite the rather large voltage it’s still a physically small power supply that should fit in most any case.

Unboxing:
The Ultra X4 power supply comes in a fairly large box, but the PSU itself isn’t all that big, in fact it’s about the standard size of a normal PSU.

The reason the box is so large is because of all the stuff that it contains. Ultra gives you plenty of cables and even a few extras like thumbscrews and even zip ties to help you do a little wire management. All of the cables actually come in a nice bag that you can use for storing the cables you don’t require. Included also is a rubber gasket that can be placed on the back of the PSU when mounted in your case, this can help to keep it quieter by lessening vibrations.

If you paid attention to the specs I listed above then you’d know this PSU comes with plenty of connections. Ultra even included a velcro strap on each cable to help you keep things neat and tidy.

The PSU itself features a nice big 135mm fan to help keep it cool along with the X4 branding on the side and honeycomb style ventilation on the back.

There is of course the identification sticker that lists the voltages on the top or the bottom of the PSU. This power supply does feature Active PFC and it’s 80Plus certified meaning that it shouldn’t be too hard on your electric bill.

ultra12 ultra13

The X4 is a fully modular style power supply which is something that I very much like about it. Every cable needs to be plugged into the main unit, and both sides of the connection are gold plated as well to insure good conductivity.

Installation, Performance, Comparison
For installation I installed it in the Element G case that I reviewed last week.

The components are Intel C2D6420, Gigabyte Motherboard, BFG PhysX Card, ATI 4870 1gig video card along with two dvd/rw drives and three hard drives.  Not a powerhouse system, but I can play most any game on high settings at 1080P resolution.

So if you read the Element G case review then you’ll recognize these pictures of the Ultra X4 installed in it:

Now I don’t have all of the expensive equipment to test power supplies like other sites do, but I do have my trusty multimeter so that I can measure the voltages on the rails when under load and at idle.

I can also use my ears to hear the sound, and I can feel and see the overall quality of the PSU and it’s components.

Running the system under load and even at idle I did notice some voltage fluctuations in the power rails, but nothing that I personally would worry too much about.  Many PSUs will fluctuate, but overall the X4 is fairly stable really, the fluctuations are very minor. I’ve trusted my system to this PSU for the last few weeks and have not urn into any issues with it at all.

The PSU itself and the cables are nicely made. The cables are sleeved with a nice thick covering and they’re not limp, but they’re not very stiff either so they can be moved around and they’ll stay where you put them really. I also very much like the fact that this PSU is fully modular and also that it’s small in size so it will be able to fit in most any case.

As far as sound is concerned the Ultra X4 is very quiet even under load.

Conclusion:
So overall the X4 is a decent PSU with a lot of great features. The fact that it is fully modular is a very nice feature, many PSUs claim to be modular but only some of the cables are. The X4 includes more than enough connectors for most any type of system and it’s small size will allow it to fit into most any case as well.

Pros:
+Fully modular
+Nicely made
+Lots of extras included
+Small size
+Quiet even under load

Cons:
-Slight voltage fluctuations

Excellent review, except for the information of how you loaded the system down? Were you multitasking or running a heavy graphic game or what all?? I would like to know about running a game, copying files to one of the 3 hdd's from a dvd, then burning a dvd, and having the defrag running in the background. That should sufficiently occupy the components to get a REALLY GOOD reading of power levels and variations. The list I just provided is a random acts list that should occupy 70-90+% CPU usage and have the drives at full power usage is the reason I recommended the listing.
