iPhone Apps For The iPhone Mom

by Kim on October 30, 2009

Move over Soccer moms… make room for the iPhone moms.

Greystripe, the leading mobile brand advertising network, released their quarterly Mobile Advertising Insights Report, detailing behavioral characteristics of moms in their iPhone ad network.  I agree with their findings – since I know many moms who own and use iPhones… myself included.  Greystripe reveals new information about the ‘iPhone mom’, a term that Greystripe originated to describe this new audience segment.

The report shows:

  • 59% of iPhone moms surveyed report that they let their children use their iPhone
  • 41% downloading entertainment applications
  • 20% downloading educational apps specifically for their kids
  • Nearly 60% of iPhone moms depend on their phone to locate the nearest store around them
  • 41.94% use the iPhone to keep track of shopping lists
  • 39.43% use their iPhone to comparison shop
  • 19 % download coupons
  • 22.94% keep track of items on sale

When it comes to actually shopping at the grocery store, a little over half of iPhone moms use their phones at the grocery store, with:

  • 40.14% using it as a shopping list tool
  • 22.58% using it as a recipe resource at the store
  • 89.25% of moms who own iPhones use their phone for entertainment purposes
  • 79.57% of iPhone moms reported using their phone for checking messages
  • 64% of iPhone moms use their phones for managing their calendar and schedule, which is 9% higher than the rest of the iPhone community as a whole

You can see the entire study here.

In light of this new study, here are some great apps for the iPhone moms (and dads too):

Bank of Mom iPhone App

Bank of Mom iPhone App

Bank of Mom – is an app that will help you keep track of your children’s virtual bank account.  Many kids are visual so if they can see how they spend their money it will help them to become financially aware.  Teaching kids about money is even more important nowadays with the economy.  One way Bank of Mom is useful is… say, you and your child (who has $20.00 in allowance) goes shopping and your son sees something he wants that costs $10.00, but he has forgotten his money.  You can check to see how much money he has and then pay for it and record a $10.00 withdrawal.  I think this app is a great way to teach your kids how to make better financial decisions – at least make them more aware of their spending habits.  And a great tool for you as a parent to monitor their spending.  Sells for $1.99.

Chore Bank iPhone App

Chore Bank iPhone App

Chore Bank – is similar to Bank of Mom in that you keep track of how much money your kids have earned for their allowance.  I like this app because it breaks down their chores.  You put in the chores that your children are expected to do and assign a dollar amount the chore earns upon completion.  When you see they’ve completed a chore or more likely, they come (if not yell) and tell you they’ve completed a chore – you check off that chore and it automatically puts the predetermined monetary value into your child’s account.  Chore Bank is also a great way to teach your kids about money.  And one thing I really love is you can set an interest rate.  So you can teach your kids the value of saving.  If you set the interest rate more on the high side… your children can see the benefits of leaving their money in a savings account – their money can make money.  Sells for $1.99.

My Kid Info iPhone App

My Kid Info iPhone App

MyKidInfo – is an iPhone app that’s name says exactly what it is… your kid’s information.  A great way to keep all the pertinent information you need when you take your children to the doctor or dentist.  Or even when you are signing them up for school or sports, etc., you’ll have their social security number, allergies and blood type information right in one convenient place.  MyKidInfo also aims to be an aide in a crisis situation where you may have to quickly recall this information for law enforcement.  Sells for $0.99.

Parent ICE iPhone App

Parent ICE iPhone App

Parent I-C-E – an ICE (In Case of Emergency) app made for parents, where you list your emergency contacts as well as allergies, medications and conditions for yourself and your children.  Many of the input fields are text fields so you put as little or as much information as you’d like, so “in case of an emergency” the information is quickly and easily accessible.  There is preference pages so you can go into more detail and be more specific about conditions.  You can also locate the nearest hospital by simply tapping the “closest hospital” button.  So if you’re in unfamiliar area and need a hospital quick this is a great feature.  You can also share your location with someone else.  Just send your GPS coordinates with anyone who has a link to your location to Google Maps.  So dad will know where you and the kidlets are if something were to happen.  Sells for $2.99.

Ever Note iPhone App

Ever Note iPhone App

Evernote – if you are an obsessive on-the-go note taker the Evernote app may just be for you.  As moms we are usually juggling twenty things at one time… using Evernote you can keep a to-do list with the voice note recorder, as well as, leave yourself messages.  I love the description of Evernote on the App Store – “This multiple-award winning app lets you remember and recall anything that happens in your life.”  Moms, if you’re like me and suffer from frequent ‘momnesia’ or what many refer to as ‘mommy brain’ (and you know what I mean), an app that claims to turn your iPhone into “an extension of your brain” sounds like a must have app.  The best part, this app is Free.

Say Who Dialer iPhone App

Say Who Dialer iPhone App

Say Who LITE Dialer & Maps – is a great app for moms of infants, toddlers and the moms with several kids.  We moms only have two hands but we could use eight… the Say Who Dialer Lite allows you to make a call using voice recognition so you can use your hands for what’s important – your kids.  Just download your contacts and then say their first name, last name or both and voila… the number will be dialed.  It also has the option of “home”, “office” and “work”.  This app is plain to look at; but it’s not for looking at… it’s for keeping your hands free.  And with California making hands-free phone mandatory (several states already passed a hands-free bill and I’m sure they’ll be more states to follow) while driving, Say Who could be that much more useful.  This app is free.

Grocery IQ iPhone App

Grocery IQ iPhone App

Grocery IQ – is a shopping list on steroids.  With its 130,000 item database, you can quickly build a favorites list to be reused over in future lists.  You can also use a history of used items to create new lists, and even enter the barcode to do fast lookups.  The app supports multiple stores, allowing you to lay out a day’s worth of shopping before you even hit the road.   And if that was not enough, the app will now give you a total of your shopping needs when you build the list, allowing you to avoid sticker shock at the checkout (and perhaps even do a little on the fly budgeting).  Sells for $0.99.

eFood Additives iPhone App

eFood Additives iPhone App

E Food Additives – Ever look at the ingredient list on the side of a popular food item, and wonder exactly what all of those long worded “extras” were and how they could affect your family?  Well, E Food Additives has a database of 595 food additives to let you know pretty much what to avoid when you do your shopping.  Bright colors on the additive list make selection simple, with green being a relatively safe additive and a red icon means “Danger, Will Robinson”.  The app also shows the additive’s source, so with a glance you will know if it comes from fish, mineral, insect (we kid you not), or chemical, among others.  About the only thing cautionary about with this type of app is this – the more you know, the more you may not want to know.  You are now warned – knowledge is not always bliss.  Sells for $0.99.

Big Oven iPhone App

Big Oven – swaggers out of the recipe gate packing 160, 000 recipes in its culinary holsters.  You can find a recipe for practically any occasion using its large repository of edible goodness.  The recipes are presented in a way that makes it easy to find, allowing the user to search by recipe title, keyword(s), or even a list of ingredients (perfect for raiding the cupboard).  If that is not enough, you will also find a picture of presented recipe, allowing you to browse the offerings not unlike the picture menus in some Chinese restaurants. Yes, with Big Oven you will not eat boring food again, assuming that you can actually cook.  This app is Free.

AllRecipes iPhone App

AllRecipes iPhone App

Allrecipes – is a very popular web site for recipes, and their app brings their collection to your pocket.  The app allows you to search for desired culinary classics by dish type, ingredient, and one of our favorites, preparation time.  So, you are hungry and you have thirty minutes – All Recipes can help.  But for those who really are clueless as to what they are wanting, just pull up the app and give it a good shake.  The app will respond with a random dish and required ingredients. If you like it, you can add it to your favorites for easier retrieval next time.  After all, it may take quite a lot of shaking to find it again.  One of the best features of All Recipes is the information provided by the members of the web site. Members often add great hints and variations on a meal that makes it even better or handier than the original listing. The app brings this along, giving you even more weapons in your fight for the next perfect meal.  And dads, you should feel free to use this app every chance you can.  This app is Free.

Urban Spoon iPhone App

Urban Spoon iPhone App

Urban Spoon – Moms we know we are too busy to always cook.  For those days you want to go out to eat… it is sometimes handy to know a little something about a restaurant to help you make a choice.  While it is always great to get a good restaurant tip from a friend, getting tips from several people makes it even better. And this is where Urban Spoon is so handy. Urban Spoon pulls in reviews from many users about that dive down the street, and you might be surprised to find that it is actually rated pretty highly (or not).  By using the GPS built into the iPhone, you don’t even have to search – the app gives you a listing of the places to eat close to you.  This is great for traveling, since it will give you a place to go and tell you about the place as well.  In fact, Urban Spoon goes one step farther with its augmented reality mode. Turn on the scope, and you can look at the phone through the camera with the restaurants overlaid on the screen.  As you turn the phone, more items will come into view as you face them.  This app is Free.

Nike Women Training Club iPhone App

Nike Women Training Club iPhone App

NikeWomen Training Club – is an app that helps you customize your workouts and even challenge and compete with your friends.  Training Club focuses on the five fundamental areas of athleticism – cardio, core, strength, balance and flexibility.  You design your own mini, pick your program and start training.  Okay, I just downloaded this app, so I haven’t had a chance to personally check it out yet… but I am so excited about it!  I think it could be very motivational.  And new moms, this could be just the help you need to get off those extra baby pounds.  Just create a program online and access it on your iPhone.  This app is Free!

Lose It! iPhone App

Lose It! iPhone App

Lose It! – where NikeWomen concentrates on getting you moving… Lose It! helps you to keep track of your nutrition.  If you count calories, this is the app for you.  Set your daily calorie budget and Lose It!  will keep you on track.  If you happen to go over your goal by 300 calories one day, you know over the next day or so you need to have a deficit to make up for it.  I use this iPhone app every day.  It’s an easy way to keep track of just what you are eating.  You can also put in your exercise.  This app is Free.

White Noise Lite iPhone App

White Noise Lite iPhone App

White Noise Lite – moms, especially new moms, often times get little to no sleep.  Here is an app that may help… or at least help you relax (which will help your mood).  White Noise Lite provides ambient sounds of the environment like rain, thunder, beach waves and a fan to name a few.  You can adjust the volume, pitch and balance, as well as, set a timer.  As an added bonus it may actually hep lull you baby to sleep.  This app is Free.

Shazam iPhone App

Shazam iPhone App

Shazam – as a music lovin’ mom this app is a dream.  How many times have you heard a song on the radio or TV and you want to know the name of it (because for some reason the DJs never tell you what you’re listening to anymore)?  With Shazam you can hold your iPhone towards the radio or TV and tap “tag” and it will identify it for you.  Not only that, you can also purchase the track because your tags link directly to iTunes.  Share your experience with your friends that have the same music tastes by sending them your tags.  You can also find out more about the music and artist.  This app is Free.

These next apps are for moms-to-be and the new moms.  Although my son is school age, I know that there are a lot of  new moms out there with iPhones.  And I wish the iPhone had been around when I first brought my son home from the hospital.

Baby Name Plus

Baby Names Plus – So, you have baby on the way, but you do not know what name to give to your child.  This name will probably be with the child for life, so you want to do a reasonably good job with picking the moniker. This is where Baby Names Plus may come in handy.  The app contains over 8500 boy and girl names, with detailed information including pronunciation, meaning, origin, and popularity over a given time.  Once you find a few names of interest you can create and reorder a favorite list while you whittle the name down to a solid choice.  In case you want input, you can even email the list to others for their opinions.  Just be sure to not accidentally download the company’s other product, Pet Names Plus – otherwise you may indeed pick an interesting name for your child.  Sells for $1.99.

Baby Brain iPhone App

Baby Brain iPhone App

Baby Brain: Your Baby Log – One of the best things you can do to insure the health of a newborn is to track everything that you do concerning the baby. This is where a baby tracking app comes in handy, and Baby Brain does the job quite handily.  The app allows you to track nursing and feeding times, sleeping times, and diaper changes.  You can check the log and review the daily stats.  It makes going to the pediatrician a breeze, and in case you need a sitter it gives them a schedule to make baby as comfortable as if you were there.  Sells for $4.99.

Baby Translator

Baby Translator

Baby Translator – Ah, the sweet sounds of baby talk!  The goo goos and the gaa gaas, along with the soft cooing (and occasional blood curdling cries) – if we only knew what they meant.  Well, wonder no longer – now we have Baby TranslatorBaby Translator is designed – or at least designed to appear – to be a translator for baby talk.  Simply record a message from your babbling infant, and in a few moments the analyzing is complete, giving you a complete translation of what your baby is saying.  Of course, this is a novelty app, so it should not be taken as serious… purely for entertainment purposes only.  Sells for $0.99.

I hope you find these iPhone apps useful (or at least entertaining).  I don’t know about you, but as a mom I love anything that will make my life easier… and the iPhone is one of the best gadgets I’ve ever owned to do just that.  The big attraction for moms, I think, is the simplicity of use with huge benefits.

I read somewhere recently where the question was raised, “Will iPhone moms surpass the soccer moms?” – I predict… yes.

Found this through a tweet from someone who followed me. Love this article, very helpful. There are a few that I know about, but most are new to me. I'm going to try three or four of them, especially the Nike one. Thanks!!

Great apps above. All of them.

What about educational games for kids. “Faces iMake” is my 7 yr olds favorite iPhone app. Let's you make faces out of everyday stuff.

Hilarious, though EXTREMELY helpful app called “Am I Done?” just came out a few weeks ago. It may very well prevent your child's next meltdown.

Great review here:
