To test the GameX we first measured electricity usage using our Kill-A-Watt meter. Then we ran the Prime95 benchmark and recorded electricity usage again. For comparison sake we also used our in-house Aspire 520W power supply that we picked up for $30-40 online a year ago. The results are below:
For those of you not really sure what any of this means let me try to explain without lecturing. The numbers above tell us how much power is being sucked out of the wall socket and used by the power supply's. In the case of benchmarking power supplies it is of course good to have lower numbers meaning that the power supply's are using less electricity to do their job. Reading the tables above we see that the OCZ GameX totally demolishes the Aspire in terms of efficiency. In both No Load and Full Load tables, the GameX uses less Watts, Volts-Amps, and has a power factor over 30% better than the Aspire's. The two main measurements you should be concerned with are Watts and Power Factor. Watts of course is a measurement of power. So the lower the amount of Watts the power supply uses the less electricity you have to pay for come electric bill time. Power Factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is consumed. A Power Factor of 1.00 or (100%) is the best any electronic can hope to obtain and simply means that it using all of the power it receives and nothing is being lost to due inductive loads. If we take a look at the tables above we see that the Aspire is only 62-63% efficient which is why it is using more power than the GameX because a lot of the power is being lost during transmission. The GameX however has a near perfect Power Factor meaning it is extremely efficient.
